Euphonium: Marc Harry
As the son of Salvation Army officers Marc has been surrounded by brass band music from his earliest days and started playing the cornet in Knottingley, aged 6. In Camborne, a few years later, Bandmaster Ken Norton wisely moved him to the larger tenor horn but it took the next family move to Torquay before Marc found himself (aged 12) holding a euphonium and falling madly in love with it! Within 6 months he was featuring as a soloist playing 'Ransomed' and 'Song of the Brother'...and he's never stopped playing them (plus a few others, of course,) since!
After passing Grade 8 with a (then) record high score aged 15 Marc narrowly missed out on winning a scholarship to the Royal College of Music and so took a BA (hons) in Music at Colchester in 1981 studying under BBC Trombonist Tony Parsons and Michael Clack (who sold Marc the 3G mouthpiece he still uses today). Moving with the family to Portsmouth after college Marc featured as euphonium soloist on hundreds of programmes with Portsmouth Citadel Band and Songsters for the next 26 years, touring in Germany, Switzerland, Holland, Belgium, Norway and the USA with them and also contributing as piano/keyboard accompanist and vocal soloist on 10 CDs with the band and songsters in that time.
Marc is still an active Salvationist at Southampton Shirley Corps. He has three sons: Morgan (a rock drummer), Lewis (who sings with renowned vocal group 'Salvacosta' and plays brass and electric guitar) and Ieuan. A fiercely proud Welshman Marc claims his son's names are a consolation prize for being born in England! Marc was a successful Head of Music at 2 Secondary Schools for many years but has now become a full-time dad for a while! He is hoping to work again as an entertainer (singing/playing/comedy). Marc has written 296 songs, has a solo CD (My Christmas Wish) and has made 2 movies as a film actor (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2218461/)
